Highland Park, NJ · Map A
The two-square
mile Borough of Highland Park was formed in 1905 when it broke away from
Raritan Township (now Edison). This "trolley suburb" is filled
with architecturally significant late Victorian and early 20th century
homes. Of particular interest is the Livingston Manor Historic District,
created by Watson Whittlesey in 1906 as a private, suburban tract development,
located within the area roughly bordered by River Road, Cleveland, Madison,
and Lawrence Avenues. This cohesive neighborhood of Craftsman Bungalow,
Cottage, Georgian Revival, Post Victorian, and Colonial Revival style
houses is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
The Livingston
Manor House, pictured above, was built upon a 151-acre tract, receiving
its first name from Queen's College president Reverend John H. Livingston,
who bought it in 1809. The imposing house became Whittlesey's home and
sales office for his Livingston Manor Corporation. In 1909, John Waldron
bought the mansion on smaller acreage and the house remained in the Waldron
family for the remainder of the 20th century.
