Historic Rutgers was the eighth college established in the American colonies. Chartered in 1766 as Queen's College, it was named for the consort of Britain's King George III. The college was renamed in 1825 to honor Colonel Henry Rutgers, a benefactor and Revolutionary War veteran. It became the State University in 1945.

Old Queens, completed in 1825, is one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the U.S. The building includes a college bell purchased by Colonel Henry Rutgers, which signaled the change of classes. Today it houses the offices of the President and other administrators.
Other buildings on Queens campus include Van Nest Hall (1845), Geology Hall (1872), Kirkpatrick Chapel (1873), Winants Hall (1890), and Schanck Observatory (1865). Four distinctive wrought iron gates punctuate the perimeter of the campus, the original nucleus of the College.

In 1880, James Neilson and Mary Putnam Woodbury, who were living in Wood Lawn with James' mother, built their "honeymoon cottage," now known as the Ruth Schilling Hennessy Alumnae Center. He left the cottage to the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College in 1937. During the 1940s and '50s, the cottage was home to many NJC Alumnae of various ages who worked in New Brunswick, as well as by staff members of the Alumnae Office. As the Alumnae staff grew, the cottage was modified to accommodate more staff and the needs of the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College. Today the cottage has evolved thanks to a generous gift by Ed Hennessy, in honor of his wife Ruth ('50). A 2,600 square foot expansion and renovation of the existing structure was recently completed. The original woodwork was restored and modern heating and cooling systems were installed to make the building as charming as it was in 1880 with the modern conveniences of the 21st century. Today a staff of 12 employees and numerous volunteers and students call the Ruth Schilling Hennessy Alumnae Center their home as they fulfill the mission of the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College.
