The South River Museum is housed in the Old School Baptist Church building constructed in 1805. The unornamented structure serves as a lasting reminder of the simplicity of the congregation who built the meeting house. A prominent feature is the 1832 marble urn created by noted American sculptor John Frazee and located in the graveyard behind the building. The church was eventually sold and, in 1923, was converted into the South River War Memorial Free Public Library. When the library moved in 1979, the building became the South River Borough Clerk's Office.
In 1999 it reopened as the South River Museum and the home of the South River Historical & Preservation Society, Inc. The site is listed on both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.

Programs for children and adults are presented throughout the year, and the museum is open to the public on scheduled Sundays and for special events. Museum exhibitions include all aspects of Borough history.
